What to know before you land

Best seasons

March–May and September–November are the sweet spots: warm days, cool nights, clear skies over the desert. Summer belongs to the coast (Essaouira, Agadir); winter to the imperial cities and the snowy Atlas.

Currency & tipping

The dirham (MAD) is closed — get some at the airport. Tips of 10 dirhams for a porter, 10% at restaurants and a small note for guides go a long way.

Dress code

Morocco is relaxed but modest wins respect: shoulders and knees covered in medinas and religious sites. Bring layers — nights in the desert and the Atlas are cold, even in summer.

Souk etiquette

Bargaining is expected and friendly — start around 40% of the asking price and meet in the middle. Never haggle unless you actually intend to buy.

Water & food

Drink bottled water and enjoy everything else. Street food in Marrakesh's Jemaa el-Fna and Fes is safe when it's freshly cooked in front of you — follow the local crowds.

Connectivity

Grab a Maroc Telecom or Orange SIM at the airport for 100 MAD — 4G reaches the desert edges. Your riad and most cafés run solid Wi-Fi.

Language

Arabic and Berber are official; French is spoken almost everywhere and English is common in tourist hubs. A few words of darija (Moroccan Arabic) open every door.

Getting around

Distances look small on the map but the roads are winding — Marrakesh → Merzouga is a full day. We use private drivers for every mission; no rental headaches, no wrong turns.
